Lake Superior Chamber Orchestra Presents
Opera, Night Call, Collect to open its 2010 Season

Life on a deserted isle? Try life on a deserted planet. This is the scenario in which
we find technician Emil Barton in Night Call, Collect, a one-act opera composed by Duluth
composer Bradley Bombardier, that will be featured in the Lake Superior Chamber Orchestra’s
opening concert of its 2010 season, Wednesday, July 7 at the Sacred Heart Music Center in
Duluth at 7:30 pm.

Having been left behind on Mars during an emergency evacuation to Earth years earlier,
Barton foresaw a long wait for a rescue. He therefore recorded his voice into thousands of
tapes, and used computers and telephone circuits to arrange telephone calls – from himself – to
help pass the time and fight loneliness. Now, years later, old age and weariness are catching up
with him, and the phone calls from his younger self are becoming increasingly maddening…
Night Call, Collect, based on a short story by Ray Bradbury, premiered twenty years ago
this summer by local tenor William Bastian and the Lake Superior Chamber Orchestra.
Reprising the opera twenty years later presents a unique opportunity. The original phone tapes
of Emil Barton (pre-recorded by Bastian) used in the performance twenty years ago still survive.
Therefore, Bastian, much like the character of Emil Barton, will be conversing with his younger
self in this performance. Life indeed imitates art for this rare “twice-in-a lifetime” opportunity!
Other chamber works include Giovanni Gabrielli’s Two Canzoni, Edvard Grieg’s
Evening in the Mountains, and Mozart’s Serenata Notturna. This first concert of the LSCO
season will be performed at the Sacred Heart Music Center in downtown Duluth at 7:30 p.m. on
July 7 at the Sacred Heart Music Center, 201 West Fourth Street in Duluth. Tickets may be
